Joey Longley

Former Executive Director

Texas State Sunset Commission

Joey Longley is a state government efficiency expert and veteran of public service, with more than 35 years of experience dealing with the legislative process, project management, government process analysis, agency management, and reporting. He is a long time staple in Texas government, best known for his 30-year career with the Texas Sunset Commission, 14 of those years as its Director. The Sunset Commission conducts the periodic legislative reviews of state government agencies, to determine their continuing need and improve their operations. Through this process, Mr. Longley developed a keen and unique insight into the intricacies of 180 state government agencies and developed key relationships with legislative leadership and members, state agency executives, and staff. Work included project planning and oversight, detailed evaluation and assessment of government programs, agency management, report writing and editing; and extensive interaction with the legislative process, including providing expert testimony, amendment drafting, and strategy.

Upon retiring from state service, Mr. Longley turned to the private sector, offering governmental relations, consulting and business development services to public and private sector clients with Blackridge, Civic Initiatives, and through his own company, Sunset Solutions. In September, 2012, Mr. Longley joined Grant Thornton, LLP as a Director in its Global Public Sector, leading the firm’s business development activities in Texas state and local government. Mr. Longley then returned briefly to state government to assist Commissioner George P. Bush with his transition at the Texas General Land Office (GLO). During his time at the GLO, Mr. Longley used his extensive experience in state government and and business process review to aid the agency through reorganization and consolidation efforts.

Most recently, he has returned to the private sector, as a partner with Gateway Partners, a government affairs company, offering a suite of assistance to its clients, including Sunset advisory services.

Mr. Longley is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Business Management and the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Mr. Longley and his family live in Round Rock, Texas.
